The tradition of knitting lace shawls began 200 years ago in an Estonian coastal town of Haapsalu. This rich traditional knitting technique is becoming increasingly popular worldwide and applied in many ways.
During this workshop you will make a lace test piece with a Haapsalu Shawl motif. You learn how to cast on and cast off according to the traditional Estonian way and you will learn about the construction of square and rectangular scarves. With these lace technique patterns you can also knit for example triangular stoles, dresses and even gloves and mittens.
In addition to ajour, the knitting contains a lot of texture, a specific characteristic is the so-called ‘nupp’s’ (a kind of 3D studs). You will learn those nupps in this workshop. And maybe you even learn the latest technology – the double nupps!
You have the choice to use the original very fine Haapsalu Shawl yarn in this workshop (needle thickness 2.50-3.50mm). Or, to make it a little easier to master the lace technique, you ca nalso knit with a slightly thicker thread.
Experience with lace knitting is a plus.
