Hadewych van der Werf – Mor Astrup

Masterclass by Hadewych van der Werf, Nordic knitting technique instructor with 40 years of experience

Technique: Mor Astrup

This technique originates from Norway and was developed by Ebba Astrup. Ebba was the director of an orphanage in Rostad, a small town on a peninsula north of Trondheim, around 1900.
While she had quite a busy job, she was also a true crafts enthusiast at heart and she developed this relatively quick technique because she was usually short on time. In this simple way, she knitted shawls in various colours and patterns for all the little orphans.

The technique comprises knitted and slipped stitches.
A number of years ago, Hadewych visited that very orphanage – which has since been turned into a shelter for young people – where one of Ebba’s shawls is still on display.
