Connie Grevers – History of knitted beadbags

My name is Connie Grevers. In daily life, work in primary education but educated as a teacher textiles and craftsmanship.
Have grown up in a real craft family. Mother has had a craft shop all her life. At a young age, I learned to knit. The premiere of knitting is mainly in knitting traditional patterns.

In 2009 we wrote, mother, sister Anke and I the first book: Gelderse knitted hats and we started a website: www.geldersemutsen.nl. This proved to be a great success. Two years later, the book was: Knitted beaded bags. In the meantime, we have issued four books and in February 2018 we will be in the tenth year in a row at the Handwerkbeurs in Zwolle as the Gelderse Mutsen.

In the 80’s I learned to knit with beads. First, very small, bigger and more difficult. Existing books did not give enough challenge, so I first put on existing bags and put them on new material after knitting. Slowly I received a whole collection of antique bags with the same new bag by me after pattern and after knitting.

Then go on to the next challenge: the design of new beadbags. Every year I try to make new designs of beadbags, not just knitted but also crocheted with beads. In 2015, I designed the jute bag lined with beads. In all these years, I’ve always been in the history of the beadbags. Slowly I started documenting all sorts of data about the history of the bead bags.

During this lecture I will tell about the history and the technique of the bead bags.
In addition to documentation, I will include examples that you may review. I would like to see you during the Breeding days in Zwolle.
