Valerie Ng – Next Steps in the Socksmith’s Odyssey
(deze workshop wordt in de Engelse taal gegeven)
This intermediate sock class is developed to help you step up from the basics of sock knitting. We will discuss topics related to the two most commonly used, in-the-round, construction methods: top-down and toe-up. From a more thoughtful understanding of gauge and material to techniques that give a more refined look to the finished product, the topics discussed in this class will put you on the right track to up your sock knitting game – to perfect your sock recipe and pave your way to becoming a sock technique connoisseur!
The lecture will be accompanied by a premiere demonstration and a hands-on session for the No Gap, No Scrap Yarn, No Cutting, Turn-as-you-go Peasant Heel:
The Peasant heel (also known as the Afterthought heel) gives a distinct bullseye look to the heel that works very with self-striping yarn and allows for customisation for a better fit. Instead of knitting the heel after the sock leg and soles are done, you will learn to turn the heel as you go. This method works for both top-down and toe-up socks.
Some of the topics to be covered in the lecture:
– Tools, Material, and Gauge
– Design Elements
– Other sock heels and toes to try
– What to be mindful of when knitting a patterned sock?
– Sock Tailoring – For Yourself and Others
– Finesse and Finishing
– Avoiding gaps at the corner
– No flare toe-up socks bind-off and No jog top-down socks cast-on
– Adding elastics and reinforcement
You are also encouraged to bring your socks and sock knitting questions along so we can look at them together!
